California Equity Journey

The California Equity Journey (CEJ) is a seven day, immersive, experiential learning journey that will foster a deeper understanding of the impacts of inequity, poverty, and injustice and will help us to identify opportunities, locally and systemically, to address these challenges. The trip is designed around dialogue with local community leaders and organizations in several key regions of the state, as well as engagement with culture and history. We’ll end in Sacramento, where we will meet with elected officials and integrate legislative and advocacy efforts with what we’ve learned on the ground in different regions. Those who take this learning journey will broaden their California lens, get to know amazing local leaders and resilient communities, and be inspired to shape a more just and equitable future for our beautiful and challenging state. Join us!

Dates: June 20-26, 2024
Cost: $5,000 per person

Regions We’ll Visit:

  • Oakland and Richmond – people and history (who was here, where are they now, and who is here now)
  • Salinas, Stockton, and Modesto – deeper dive into issues (immigration, farm workers/agriculture, water, growth and development, poverty, environment/climate, health, education, etc)
  • Sacramento – policy and integration (integrate legislative and advocacy efforts; understand levers for systemic change)

Learning Outcomes:

  • Be better informed about priorities, issues and challenges for California
  • Understand how issue areas are related to each other
  • Understand how different parts of the state are connected
  • Learn how challenges are being addressed in different communities
  • Gain confidence is learning how to spot and support opportunities
  • Learn success stories and replicability in other communities and other work
  • Learn about policy and advocacy level efforts and tools as levers for systems change; philanthropic toolkit deepened with these tools

The learning will shape how we engage with and fund social impact organizations through a renewed commitment to equity practices and action shaped by compassion. We expect also to gain a deeper understanding of the value of supporting community level upstream efforts and more strategic consideration of advocacy tools for systems change.
