Welcome Impact Investee, NeedsList!

grantee international disaster nonprofitWe’re thrilled to introduce our newest Impact Investee, NeedsList! SV2 has made a $50,000 investment in NeedsList, which joins our portfolio as our eighth Impact Investee since 2015.

NeedsList is a platform solution creating a new way to match resources with communities in crisis to support local economies. With NeedsList, NGO workers are able to share the needs of their community via the platform. From there, individual and corporate donors can immediately meet those needs by purchasing goods from suppliers who are local to the NGO and by donating funds. NeedsList helps communities receive the resources they need from in-country suppliers to save time when needs are urgent and to build relationships between local suppliers and community service agencies.

Natasha Freidus founded NeedsList in 2016 in response to her experience as an aid worker coordinating resources to support Syrian refugees in France. Her co-founder Amanda Levinson, similarly realized that supply drives and other means of collecting resources were time-consuming and inefficient. Together, they built NeedsList to support local economies, foster relationships between NGO workers and suppliers, and make sure donors could meet community needs around the globe.

We are pleased to support NeedsList as they connect donors to communities and communities to resources. Join us in welcoming NeedsList to the SV2 community. For more information, please visit NeedsList at their website.

Tech Nonprofits Grant Round Returns this Fall

Back by popular demand, SV2 will offer a second Lightning Grant Round focused on tech nonprofits this fall! This Round was offered last March with an outstanding group of nonprofit applicant organizations, and we are hosting it again because of strong interest in the topic. SV2 Partners Dan Barritt and Rekha Pai will co-lead the Round, and we will again partner with Fast Forward, who will be nominating a new group of organizations from their portfolio. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about a high-quality group of nonprofits, all leveraging technology platforms or programs to address complex social challenges in our community. We encourage all interested Partners to participate and welcome those who participated last March to join us again, if interested, as we will be considering a new group of nonprofits.

This sounds amazing! Tell me how to sign up…

In-person meetings for this Lightning Grant Round will be in the evenings on Tuesday, October 30 and November 13 from 6:30 – 9:00pm at the Mitchell Park Community Center. The Round will kick-off in late September, before the first meeting, with diligence pre-work, which includes reading and optional conference calls with our funder allies.

To RSVP for this Lightning Grant Round, please RSVP here.

What is a Lightning Grant Round?

Lightning Grant Rounds are a shortened grantmaking experience, taking place over four to six weeks with only two in-person meetings. For the Lightning Rounds, SV2 collaborates with funder allies who nominate organizations from their own portfolios and share their diligence materials with us. Working with funder allies relieves the burden for nonprofit applicants and allows SV2 Partners to learn how our funder allies approach their work. For this Round, we’re delighted to work with Fast Forward, a tech nonprofit accelerator, who will nominate organizations from their portfolio. During Lightning Rounds, participating Partners have the opportunity to research six organizations in the sector, learn from funder allies about these organizations, hear presentations from the leaders of three finalist organizations, and collectively select a single Grantee. Lightning Round Grantees receive a one-year general operating support grant of up to $30,000, and participating Partners get to engage in a fantastic hands-on learning experience.

Welcoming New Staff Amy Badiani & Lucinda Brommersma!

Welcome, Amy Badiani!

We are thrilled to welcome Amy Badiani to the SV2 staff team as Program Manager! Amy will be supporting SV2’s grantmaking, family philanthropy, and relationships with our Grantees and Impact Investees. Amy joins us from Ashoka, where her work has included the design and implementation of education, employment, and anti-corruption initiatives with youth. She also facilitated “Storytelling for Changemaking” initiatives, and produced courses with other social innovators around the world about Social Intrapreneurship for Innovation in Health. Amy graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a B.S. and M.S. in 2011 and 2012 respectively. In her free time, she enjoys solving challenges with her volunteer social impact team at Development Solutions Organization. In addition, you will find her dancing (she’s a Doonya dance fitness instructor), adventuring in nature, running and hiking, reading, discussing Harry Potter, cooking, and overall being present with loved ones. She’s very excited to learn, re-imagine, do, collaborate, and grow with the SV2 community.

Welcome, Lucinda Brommersma!

Please join us in welcoming Lucinda Brommersma as the new SV2 Director of Partner Engagement. Lucinda has a background in marketing at tech companies and is an active volunteer at her children’s schools. She is a board member of her local public school district’s education foundation, raising funds to augment services in schools. She is passionate about education, girls’ and women’s leadership, and women’s health issues. She and her family have also joined SV2 as Partners, and are looking forward to participating more deeply in local giving through the SV2 community.

Board Members: Thank you & Welcome

Hats off to SV2’s outgoing board member in 2018: Kelly Pope. Join us in thanking Kelly for modeling shared leadership, thoughtful stewardship, and empathy during her time on our Board.

Kelly Pope concludes her six years of board service this June. She has been a spectacular leader in a variety of areas during her tenure, including chairing the Grant and Impact Investment Review Committee (GIIRC), serving on the steering committee for SV2’s Visionary Leadership Circle, and participating in not one but two strategic planning processes.

We’re also thrilled to welcome two incoming board members this summer: Alison Elliott and Nancy Heinen. Alison and Nancy are experienced SV2 leaders and longtime SV2 Partners who bring an impressive skill set to the Board. Read their full bios here.

Alison Elliott has multiple career experiences extending from a middle school social studies classroom to a large NYC bank to Silicon Valley software startups to the Center for Social Innovation at Stanford University.  Most recently, she co-led the Pathways to Opportunity Classic Grant Round. Nancy Heinen is an experienced corporate lawyer and senior executive in both small and multinational corporations. Most recently she was Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Apple, Inc. Nancy currently serves as Lead Partner to Village Enterprise and will become the new chair for the SV2 Grant and Impact Investment Review Committee (GIIRC) this summer.

“Advocacy is Everywhere” Series, in case you missed it!

This Spring, SV2 kicked off its first Advocacy learning series, with the aim of helping SV2 Partners, Grantees & Impact Investees, and the broader SV2 community to better evaluate whether, when, and how they want to incorporate advocacy as a social change tool in their philanthropy and work.

The series generated some great content and handouts that Partners and strategic allies may find useful as they continue on their advocacy learning journeys. SV2 Partners are welcome to dive into the full content library here on my.SV2. Below, we’re sharing some quick links to helpful resources and video recordings from all three workshops, some of which are available to all:

SV2 Partner Survey: The results are in!

We’ve completed our 2018 All-Partner Survey designed to assess SV2’s impact on Partners and provide our Partners with the opportunity to share their ideas for how we can continue to deepen our impact. This year’s results will feed directly into next year’s program plan and fuel SV2’s ongoing learning and improvement. Thank you to all the Partners who took time to complete the survey!

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Our Partners make it a point to give locally: In the last year, over half of the survey respondents dedicated 50% or more of their giving to local community-based organizations
  • SV2 Partners gave ~$800,000 in follow-on funding to SV2 Grantees and Impact Investees, which roughly doubles SV2’s grants out the door this year
  • When asked what Partners value most about SV2, respondents mentioned SV2’s vibrant community and the rich, varied opportunities to learn about philanthropy and social impact
  • 92% of respondents were very satisfied or satisfied with SV2

Everyone can read more highlights. SV2 Partners can also read the full report.

Portfolio Review 2018: Successes and Learnings

circle of people holding hands portfolio reviewAt the end of each fiscal year, the SV2 Board Grant and Impact Investment Review Committee (GIIRC) hears updates on SV2’s entire grant and impact investment portfolio and approves the renewal of multi-year grants. The GIIRC is led by Kelly Pope and committee members include Bill Brownell, Linda Lazor, Jill Matzke, Tony Stayner and Paru Yusuf. To maximize this rich opportunity to learn about SV2’s impactful and impressive portfolio, the Portfolio Review meeting is open to the entire Partnership.

Partner Jan Half attended the Portfolio Review meeting for the first time this year and had this to share: “When I joined SV2, I knew about the Classic Grant Rounds, but was not as aware of Lightning Rounds and Impact Investing. Attending this meeting really helped me learn about and understand the other areas — and possibly become more involved with impact investing as well as grantmaking. This meeting provides an important view of what happens in our relationship with Grantees and Investees after the initial investment is made. Because it’s a long meeting, it’s helpful that people have the opportunity to come to some parts and not others. The Portfolio Review provides a great overview of SV2’s work — and helped me as a Partner speak more intelligently about that work. I would really encourage all Partners to attend next year!”

SV2’s portfolio is made up of three types of organizations:

  • Three-year “Classic” Grantees
  • One year “Lightning” Grantees
  • Impact Investees

As each of these types of organizations has a different relationship with SV2, the reporting for each looks different. Classic Grantees and Impact Investees have Lead Partners, who serve as liaisons between the organization and SV2. Part of their role is to report annually to the GIIRC on the progress, work, and impact of each organization. Due to their shorter time in the SV2 Portfolio, Lightning Grantees don’t have Lead Partners, so Jody Chang, Director of Grantmaking, reported on our Lightning Grant Round work and Grantees. Dan Barritt, Partner leader of the Tech Nonprofits Lightning Grant Round, also shared an executive summary of feedback from the Round. Lisa Jones, one of the co-leads for the Impact Investing Working Group, presented a helpful overview of SV2’s impact investing work, including a summary slide of our investees’ impact in the past year.

Following these reports and overview presentations, all participants joined in a generative discussion about SV2’s overall portfolio — particularly focused on the interplay between direct services and systems-change work through advocacy.

We are eager to explore ways to use these insights to continue to sharpen our grantmaking and impact investing approach and to think strategically about the direction of our overall portfolio. Thank you to all who attended!

Welcome, Justina!

In this season of exciting developments, we are thrilled to welcome our newest team member, Justina Du, joining us as our Operations Manager. Prior to SV2, Justina worked as a strategy director at a global media agency and has extensive experience in delivering media strategies, streamlining processes, and project management. She holds a BA from University of California, Los Angeles. Please join us in warmly welcoming Justina to the SV2 community!

Thank you and Farewell to Carrie Boyle

After almost four years with SV2, our Director of Finance & Operations Carrie Boyle has moved on to her next adventure, pursuing her MBA at The University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. We’re deeply thankful for all that Carrie has done in service of the SV2 staff and mission, and we’re thrilled to celebrate her and her gifts as she embarks on this exciting next step.

Carrie joined the team in August 2014, bringing her experience working with frontline nonprofit organizations and her passion for nonprofit operations. Since day one, she has worked diligently to support the SV2 partnership, from running smooth day-to-day operations to creating the systems and infrastructure that have positioned SV2 to scale. Throughout her time at SV2, Carrie has skillfully accomplished or supported nearly every aspect of life at SV2. Her “hats” have included handling all internal operations, event planning, managing SV2’s biweekly newsletter, office management, HR, budgeting and cost accounting, and recruitment support to grow the SV2 partnership. Through each new challenge, Carrie consistently displays humility, collaborative leadership, and truly lives with a growth mindset, always taking others’ needs and ideas into account throughout any decision-making process.

Throughout her time at SV2, Carrie has grown into her role as our Director of Finance & Operations, transitioning from overseeing smooth day-to-day operations to creating and directing all internal and external systems and communications. She has supported many key projects that have built SV2’s infrastructure and positioned SV2 for scale and success. In 2015, Carrie worked to migrate all of SV2’s data onto the Salesforce CRM, which smoothed the way for SV2’s newsletter rebranding, strengthened analytics tracking and robust data management. She also completed an in-depth cost analysis for SV2’s programming in 2016 that informed SV2’s 2017-2020 strategic planning process.  To prepare for SV2’s 2018 Spring Gathering, Carrie also served as our interim Grantee liaison, demonstrating her adept flexibility and team player mindset. Recently, Carrie has partnered with the Board’s Partnership Growth Committee, bringing her expertise and systems thinking to carefully prepare for the growth and cultivation of SV2’s unique partnership and culture. Carrie is also a fierce advocate for advancing equity in the SV2 workplace and our operations, often bringing an equity lens to conversations.

Carrie truly brings her whole self to the office and each day is brighter for it. We have all benefited from Carrie’s posture of service as she is always a ready listener, a kind and attentive thought partner, and a passionate champion of our staff, Grantees, and Partners. On Mondays, she often has stories to share from her weekend adventures, usually spent with friends or traveling throughout the Bay Area. The question, “How was your weekend?” usually gets a response along the lines of a story about stumbling upon an international dog surfing championship or updates on the cross-country road trip she’s planning to take on her way to Michigan for grad school. Her joy for supporting others, for life’s unexpected adventures, and for creating lasting, compassionate friendships have made her an invaluable team member, incredible friend, and a cornerstone of the SV2 community. Anyone who has gotten to know Carrie appreciates that her whole self is a true delight and we’ve been honored to serve SV2 alongside her.

Please join us in thanking Carrie for her years of service to SV2. Carrie, you will always have a home in SV2, and we’re always cheering for your continued success.
